Teaching hospitals and industry money
Institutions appear in Open Payments too, and the numbers are large.
Teaching hospitals are covered recipients in their own right. Roughly 1,300 of them appear in the data.
What flows to a hospital
Overwhelmingly research funding — clinical-trial contracts, investigator-initiated study support, registry participation. Also grants, charitable contributions, device loans for evaluation, and space rental (a category that exists only for teaching hospitals).
Why hospital totals dwarf individual ones
A single phase-III trial contract can exceed the lifetime general-payment total of an entire department. Comparing a hospital line to a physician line is comparing institutional research infrastructure to a lunch.
What it is useful for
Hospital-level data shows where industry-funded research concentrates, which manufacturers fund which institutions, and how a centre’s research profile has shifted year to year. It is a research-capacity indicator far more than a conflict indicator.
